Software piracy is the illegal reproduction and distribution of software applications, whether for business or personal use.

While you may know that copying and/or distributing copyrighted software illegally is considered piracy, you may not be aware that even possession of software that has been illegally copied is piracy. There are actually many distinct types of software piracy, and familiarity with them can protect you from any connection, even if unintentional, to intellectual property theft.

Copyright Transfer Or License - How You Can Share Your Copyright And Still Keep It

You can transfer the copyright to an image, either by selling it or giving it away. If so, you give up all rights that you had in the image as if you never took the photograph. But the only way to give up a copyright to an image is in writing.

Even when copies of a photo are distributed, the photographer retains the copyrights to the image. If you give your client copies of the digital files, without more, you are not giving up your copyrights.

The GNU General Public License GNU GPL or simply GPL is a copyright license for free software created by Richard Stallman of the Free Software Foundation.

The GPL was originally created by Stallman for the GNU project which was an attempt to develop a free operating system as well the associated utilities, as a complete alternative to proprietary software. Stallman developed the GPL because early versions of GNU project utilities had a separate, and mutually incompatible license, for each program, which meant that the programs could not share code.

Many photographers use music to enhance their photography. But since music is a work protected by copyright law, make sure that you honor the copyright of the composer, too.

Most photographers recognize that copying music from a friend or downloading from a music sharing website is illegal. But even if you purchased the CD or song outright, you may be infringing on the copyrights if you use the music for more than personal purposes.

Open Source software is distributed under a variety of licenses each of which usually permits licensee to distribute and modify the software, provided that the licensee complies with a specified set of terms and conditions.

A question that can therefore arise, is a licensee legally permitted to create modifications which combine elements of two (or more) different existing works into a single work, and distribute the result?

The answer is that these types of combinations are generally only legally permitted if the licensee can comply with all the pertinent terms and conditions of all the licenses.

American Airlines is sponsoring a “Why You Fly” contest. The grand prize is a year’s worth of flying, and most anyone could use that. You enter by submitting a photo, an essay or a video.

On the contest website, you get to the page that is titled, “Legal Terms and Conditions.” You have to scan down to read the entire text. While most folks might “accept” the terms without reading them, this has some fine print that a photographer should read.
