There is a relationship between information security and home security. A thief or unscrupulous visitor in your home could easily walk away with all types of information that could be very useful in this age of computers everywhere and the Internet. So here are some precautions to take to help yourself, your family, friends and loved ones, stay safe.
1) There are a few steps to take to help protect the information you have stored on your home computer. Begin by making sure you are the only person who has access to your log in information. Then ask a professional to help you install a good security system or install one for you. There are several different types of programs and software on the market, so check around, do a little research and see what fit into your budget.
2) If you take you computer to work with you, make sure to keep it safe while traveling. Don’t leave it in unlocked vehicles or out in the open even with locked car doors. Secure it in a trunk or briefcase, and place a jacket or small blanket over top to hide it.
3) To help stop people form entering areas they shouldn’t, set up alarms and security systems. These can be installed in your vehicles, around your home and inside your home, to help thwart attempts at theft. So seek advise on systems and get some in place.
4) Take care not to broadcast information to others in inappropriate ways. For example, do not announce to others aloud important information about your accounts, log in codes, security access details, etc. Destroy carbons of receipts and copies and other printouts of important information.
In short, the less people know about your private details, the better. Strive to limit this type of info sharing with only very, very close contact - family members, trusted friends, next door neighbors and close business associates. This will help stop burglary attempts and theft of important information.
5) Check with professionals about online security for your computer. You need systems in place like firewalls to help prevent theft of information form your computer and systems.
So search online for solutions, and check with local computer and software stores for advice and recommendations. Head to places like eBay.com, Amazon.com and MySimon.com to compare the latest in protection for your needs. Be wise and plan ahead to protect yourself, your home and your information.
