Grandparents Rights Bill In Iowa Is Still Overlooked!
Posted on January 28, 2008 - Filed Under Legal and Law
Grandparents rights in Iowa passed the Senate on March 13, 2007 allowing grandparents the right to petition the court. Many grandparents drew a hardy sigh of relief after being denied their grandchildren possibly for years. State to state the the laws are different on the rights of grandparents. Divorce, single parent families, and hostilities between families can make it nearly impossible for a grandparent to see a grandchild. Unfortunately some parents have even learned to use their children as leverage against family members including grandparents. When vindictiveness and spite are used the grandparent is not the only one suffering from the separation. The child loses out on time spent with a a family member who has so much to give.
I watched my parents be denied two of their grandchildren due to a divorce. The last time they saw the two children they were four years old and six months. My father passed away and never even glimpsed a picture of the children. The grandson showed up when he was seventeen to meet the other side of his family. It was an emotional meeting. He told his grandmother how he had wanted to see his father for years but his mother would not let him. It was not from living states apart or a hardship of any kind as they lived only sixty miles away. It was vindictiveness and spite between families. I have seen this repeated continually in Iowa as I get older.
I am for the rights of grandparents. State to state grandparents rights are handled differently or do not exist. A nationwide Grandparents Rights Organization does exist in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. They are a nonprofit group started in 1978. I recently have found myself in the same situation that my parents had been in regarding my only grandchild. I tried to find out what I could do but all I found were very vague articles, confusing texts, and told to hire an attorney.
I even went so far as to approach the state recourse better known as the Department of Human Recourses. It was a waste of my breath. They were not even aware that the bill had been passed by the Senate. They are for the right of the parent and I was treated very rudely for inquiring about the bill but the staff quickly wrote down the information I did give them about the bill.
